The resilience of tourism businesses in mountainous regions is increasingly becoming an essential prerequisite for sustainable development. These businesses operate in environments characterized by ecological vulnerability, high dependence on natural resources, seasonal fluctuations in demand, and infrastructural constraints. Their ability to withstand economic and environmental crises is closely linked to local livelihoods and long-term stability of tourism destinations. The present study addresses this research gap by identifying and prioritizing the factors affecting the resilience of tourism businesses and examining the moderating role of the destination’s economic-environmental characteristics in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, Iran. This applied study employed a descriptive-correlational research design and used Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze relationships among the variables. Data were collected from 250 managers and operators of tourism businesses using a researcher-developed five-point Likert-scale questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS software. The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed through content validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity, while its reliability was established using Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability, all of which exceeded 0.70. The results indicated that social capital (β = 0.314), human capital and entrepreneurship (β = 0.264), governance and crisis management (β = 0.216), and innovation and technological capability (β = 0.201) had significant positive effects on resilience, collectively explaining 49.9% of the variance in resilience. Among these factors, social capital and human capital and entrepreneurship demonstrated the strongest effects on resilience. Furthermore, the destination’s economic-environmental characteristics significantly moderated the relationship between governance/crisis management and resilience (β = 0.221), indicating that institutional coordination and preventive planning become increasingly important for strengthening resilience under more challenging economic-environmental conditions. Accordingly, strengthening social networks and professional associations, developing entrepreneurial capabilities, and formulating context-sensitive institutional policies can provide effective pathways for enhancing the resilience of tourism businesses in mountainous destinations.
